Sustainable projects enhance circular economy


The Ministry of Municipality organised the ‘3rd Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference & Exhibition’ on May 9 which shed light on waste management, recycling, and sustainability. Ahmad Saeed Al Kuwari, Cluster Transformation Lead, Supply Chain Localization (Tawteen) highlighted the investment opportunities in the field of waste management. Al Kuwari noted that Tawteen is a supply chain localization initiative for the energy sector led by QatarEnergy, it encompasses the Cluster Development, In-country Value (ICV) and Supplier Development. “Tawteen is committed to continuously supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030 and energy sector by creating investment opportunities related to waste management. We will be continuously adopting waste to product strategies to enhance the circular economy and have an open mind to new technologies that can be adopted in Qatar to enhance productivity and lower the environmental impact,” he said.

New IEA report highlights the need and means for the oil and gas industry to drastically cut emissions from its operations


A new IEA (International Energy Agency) report – Emissions from Oil and Gas Operations in Net Zero Transitions released on May 3 examines the immediate steps the oil and gas industry needs to take to significantly reduce its emissions footprint and help move the world closer to meeting its international energy and climate goals. The production, transport and processing of oil and gas emitted the equivalent of 5.1 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2022. In the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, the emissions intensity of these activities falls by 50% by the end of the decade. Combined with the reductions in oil and gas consumption in this scenario, this results in a 60% reduction in emissions from oil and gas operations to 2030.

G7 Ministers Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment


The Group of Seven (G7) rich nations’ energy and environment ministers, on Sunday (April 16) vowed to ramp up efforts and work toward cleaner and renewable energy while also phasing out power plants using coal, in a statement, following discussions in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo. After two days of discussions between the environment and energy ministers of the bloc, they released a 36-page statement outlining some of their commitments ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima set to take place next month. The countries have also pledged to contribute to “expanding renewable energy globally” and reaffirmed their commitment to “achieving a fully or predominantly decarbonised power sector by 2035.”

UN International Day of Zero Waste


On 14 December 2022, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution proclaiming 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually starting in 2023. To commemorate the Day, Member States, organizations of the UN system, civil society, the private sector, academia, youth, and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national, subnational, regional, and local zero-waste initiatives.

UN 2023 Water Conference


The UN 2023 Water Conference, which took place from 22-24 March at the United Nations in New York City has generated more than 700 commitments aimed at driving transformation towards a water-secure world. It’s the first global freshwater conference in nearly 50 years that covered a range of water-related issues, including a surge in flooding, droughts, drying rivers and other extreme changes to water resources linked to climate change.

UN Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report


On March 20, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the U.N.’s climate–science body, released the final volume in a series of reports outlining experts' latest understanding of the science of climate change. The report declared the science of climate change “unequivocal” and warned that even with urgent action we will continue to face a dramatic uptick in catastrophic events—from droughts to floods—that have become tell-tale signs of a rapidly warming world.

Qatar and Gates Foundation pledge $200 million to help farmers adapt to climate change


Doha: Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today, at the 2022 Doha Forum, a new strategic partnership called Nanmo, or “growing together” in Arabic. Nanmo will invest in climate-adaptive agricultural tools and technologies to build resilient food systems and markets that provide nutrition, income, and economic opportunities to small-scale producers and their communities across the African continent.

First 800MW solar power plant to start this year
